Ernest August Daines was born in Kirtling in 1895 (Newmarket Q3-1895 3B:504 ), baptised in Kirtling on 8th September 1895, son of Joseph Alfred and Rebecca DAINES
(née CLARKE).
1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Hall Road, Kirtling with his father Joseph DAINES [37] horse keeper, born Kirtling; his mother Rebecca [36] born Runcton, Norfolk; sister Effie Matilda [12] and brothers Edward [10] and Frederick [7]. All the children were born in Kirtling. There was another sister, Florence Hannah DAINES born 1886 but not at home this night, she was a housemaid for Rev Brookman at the Rectory, Kirtling 1911 census...Aged 15, farm labourer, he was at Park Gate Cottages, Kirtling, with his parents, brother Edward (stock man) and brother Frederick ( milk hawker). Sister Florence was now housemaid to Chevalier Ginistrelli at Villa Signorina, Fordham Road, Newmarket On the pension card the family are at Rose Cottage, Kirtling |
He enlisted in Newmarket. Being wounded, and his Army records not being found it is impossible to be sure where or when he was wounded. The 11th Suffolk had been fighting around Fort Rompu in the battle of the Lys at that time. |
